THE CHAPTER OF THE NEZZARIYYAH • 16 – THE SITUATION OF ONE WHO DELIBERATELY LIES

From Ibn 'Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him:
Two men disputed in the presence of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, asked the one who was demanding proof to present it. But he had no proof. He then ordered the other man to swear an oath. He swore by Allah, there is no deity except Him.
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Indeed, you have sworn, but due to the sincerity in your words ‘La ilaha illallah,’ your sins have been forgiven.”
Abu Dawud said: From this hadith it is understood that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, did not order him to perform an expiation.
