2515 – It is narrated from Muʿādh ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “There are two types of war: As for the one who seeks Allah’s riḍā (contentment with God's decree) and obeys the imām (leader), spends his most precious wealth, makes things easy for his companions, and avoids corruption (fasād), then for such a person, both his sleeping and his waking are all reward. But as for the one who fights out of pride, showing off, and to be heard of, who disobeys the imām, and causes corruption (fasād) on earth, such a person does not return with a reward sufficient to offset his sin.” [369]

2516 – It is narrated from Abū Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him): A man said, “O Messenger of God, a man desires to perform jihād (striving in the path of God) for the sake of Allah, yet he also wants to obtain something of the worldly goods.” The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “There is no reward for him.” This answer of the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) had a great effect on the people. They said to the man, “Repeat your question to the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him), perhaps you did not make your statement clear to him.” The man said, “O Messenger of God, a man desires to perform jihād (striving in the path of God), yet he also wants to obtain something of the worldly goods.” The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “There is no reward for him.” They said to the man, “Repeat your question to the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him).” The man repeated his question to the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) a third time, and he replied, “There is no reward for him.”
