THE NEZIRLAR SECTION · 13 – COULD KASEM BE AN OATH?
Ibn ‘Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, reported:
Abu Bakr pledged an oath to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Do not pledge an oath.”
EXPLANATION
According to Imam al-A’zam: Even if the Name of Allah is not mentioned, the words "I swear" constitute an oath. If one breaks the oath, a penance is required.
From Ibn 'Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him:
Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated: "A man came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and said, 'I saw a dream last night,' and he recounted his dream. Abu Bakr interpreted the dream." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “You were correct in some aspects, and mistaken in others.”
Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, said: "May my father be sacrificed to you, O Messenger of Allah! I swear by Allah, tell me what was the error in my interpretation." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Do not swear.”
From Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him: The narration of the hadith preceding this one was related, but in this narration, the word "Qasim" was omitted. However, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, added the phrase “did not inform” regarding Abu Bakr.
