HUNTING SECTION · 1 – KEEPING DOGS FOR HUNTING AND OTHER PURPOSES
2844 – It is narrated from Abū Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Whoever keeps a dog other than a sheepdog, a hunting dog, or a dog for guarding orchards and fields, two qirāṭs (qirāṭ: a quarter of a dīnār; here, an amount known to Allah) are deducted from his reward every day.” [562]
EXPLANATION
Qirāṭ (qırat): Means a quarter of a dīnār. Here, it refers to an amount known to Allah the Exalted.
2845 – It is narrated from ʿAbdullāh ibn Mughaffal (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “If dogs were not a community among the communities (of creation), I would have commanded that they all be killed. So, kill the completely black dog among them.” [563]
EXPLANATION
Dogs represent a species among the creatures. Just as there are signs indicating Allah’s power in every species of animal, there are many wisdoms in the creation of the dog as well. Therefore, the killing of all ordinary dogs was not commanded. However, it was commanded to kill the most evil among them, which are the black dogs.
2846 – It is narrated from Jābir (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded the killing of dogs, to the extent that we would even kill the dog that was with a woman coming from the desert. Then he forbade us from killing them, and said, “Pay attention to killing the black dogs.”
