SECTION ON JIHAD · 152 – A SHARE OF THE SPOILS IS ALSO GIVEN TO WOMEN AND SLAVES
2727 – It was narrated from Yazid ibn Hurmuz (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: (The leader of the Khawarij) Najdat wrote a letter to Ibn Abbas. He mentioned many things and asked him about certain issues (among them): he asked about the slave, "Is there anything of the spoils for the slave?" He asked about the woman, "Did they go out to battle in the company of the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him)? And are they given a share of the spoils?" Ibn Abbas said: "If I were not sure that this man would not do something foolish, I would not have written him a reply." Ibn Abbas replied to him as follows: "As for the slaves, they were also given a share. As for the women, they would treat the wounded and give water to the thirsty." This was his answer.
EXPLANATION
This noble hadith indicates that women may participate in battle and serve as nurses by bandaging the wounded. Yazid ibn Hurmuz al-Madani (may Allah be pleased with him) was trustworthy. He trained many students. He was born in the eighteenth year of the Hijra. Ibn Hibban mentioned him among the trustworthy. (Tahdhib al-Tahdhib, vol. 11, p. 368)
2728 – It was narrated from Yazid ibn Hurmuz that he said: Najdat al-Haruri wrote a letter to Ibn Abbas. He was asking him about the women: "Did they go out to battle with the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him)? Did the Messenger of God allocate a share for them?" Yazid ibn Hurmuz said: "I wrote Ibn Abbas’s letter to Najdat (and it said): Women would go out to battle in the company of the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him). But no share was allocated to them. They were given a small amount." [491]
2729 – It was narrated from the grandmother of Hashr ibn Ziyad that she was the sixth of the six women who went out on the expedition of Khaybar in the company of the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him). (Umm Ziyad continued:) Our going out reached the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him). He sent word to us. We came, and we saw signs of anger on the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: "With whom did you go out? And with whose permission did you go out?" We said: "O Messenger of God, we went out to spin wool. With this, we will serve in the way of Allah. We have medicines with us to treat the wounded. We will collect arrows. We will give water to the soldiers with porridge made from roasted flour." The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Rise!" Then, when Allah granted him the conquest of Khaybar, he gave us a share just as he gave the men a share. Hashraj said: I asked, "O grandmother, what was your share?" My grandmother replied, "It was dates."
2730 – From Umayr, the freed slave of Abū’l-Lahm: At the conquest of Khaybar, I was present in the company of my masters. They mentioned my bravery to the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him). He gave an order for me. A sword was fastened to me. Because of my short stature, I was dragging it. It was reported that I was a slave. He ordered that I be given something from the household goods (like a pot). Abū Dāwūd said: This means that the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) did not assign him a share. Abū Dāwūd noted that Abū ʿUbayd said: That person forbade himself from eating meat. For this reason, he was called Abū’l-Lahm (the father of meat)." [492]
2731 – It was narrated from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: On the day of the Battle of Badr, I would go down to the bottom of the well and fill water with my hand for my companions.
EXPLANATION
Emihū: It means, "I would go down to the bottom of the well and fill water with my hand." If the water in the well ran out and did not reach the bucket, this was how it was done.
