SECTION 33 – Eating the Flesh of Donkeys
Jabir ibn Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated:
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) forbade us from eating the meat of beasts of burden on the day of Khaybar, and permitted us to eat horsemeat. Amr said: I conveyed this news to Abu Sha’sa, and he said: Among us, al-Hakim Giffari used to relate it in this manner. Ibn Abbas avoided this (matter).
Galib ibn 'Abjar, may Allah be pleased with him, related:
A year of famine afflicted us. I had nothing to feed my family except for a fat donkey among my possessions. But the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, had forbidden us from eating the meat of working donkeys. So I came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and said: “O Messenger of Allah, a year of famine has afflicted us, and I have nothing to feed my family except for a fat donkey among my possessions. But you have forbidden us from eating donkey meat.” Thereupon the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Feed your family from the fattest of donkeys. Indeed, I forbade their meat because they roam the villages and eat human waste."
From Ibn al-Maqil, who transmitted from two men of the Banu Muzaynah tribe, one of whom is Abdullah ibn Amr ibn Uwaym and the other is Galib ibn Abjar.
The narrator Misar said: I am of the opinion that whoever comes before the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, prevails. The narrator then recounted the preceding hadith.
Amr ibn Shu’ayb has narrated from his grandfather that he said:
On the day of the campaign of Khaybar, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade [people] from eating the meat of the animals belonging to the people of Khaibar, riding beasts that eat filth, and consuming their meat.
