CHAPTER · 40 – EATING GARLIC
Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) said: “Whoever eats garlic or onions, let him keep away from us or stay away from our mosques, and remain at home.” A round platter containing greens from legumes was brought to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him). He sensed a smell from it and asked, "What is in this platter?" He was informed about the legumes contained within. He then gestured towards one of his companions who was present, ordering, “Give this food to that person.” The companion noticed the Prophet’s demeanor and did not want to eat the food. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) said: "You eat it; do not look at what I have not eaten, for I speak with someone you cannot speak with [the angel]."
Ahmed bin Salih, one of the narrators, said: Ibn Wahb has interpreted the word *badra* in the narration as a platter.
Abu Sa’id al-Hudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated:
Mention was made before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) of onions and garlic. They said, “O Messenger of Allah, which of these is the most intense?” He replied, "Garlic. Whoever eats it should not approach this mosque until its smell has gone.”
Huzayfa (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: It is as I think that he also transmitted from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him), who said: “Whoever spits towards the qibla, comes on the Day of Resurrection with his spittle between his two eyes. And whoever eats that foul-smelling vegetable, let him not approach our mosque until its odor has left.”
According to the narration of Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Whoever eats of this plant (garlic), let him not approach the masjids."
Muġira ibn Shu'ba (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated:
I had eaten garlic and came to the prayer place of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). I had passed one rakʿa of the prayer. When I entered the mosque, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) smelled the odor of the garlic. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) finished his prayer, he said: “Whoever eats from this plant (garlic) should not approach us until its smell disappears.” When I finished the prayer, I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "O Messenger of Allah! I swear an oath [to you]." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) extended his hand to me, and I inserted it into my shirt from the sleeve up to my chest, so that I was embracing his chest. Then, when he realized that I had embraced his chest, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “You have an excuse.”
It is narrated from Hurr, may Allah be pleased with him, the father of Muawiyah: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade two plants (onions and garlic), saying, "Whoever eats these should not approach our mosque." He then mentioned onions and garlic again, saying, “If you must eat them, cook them until their odor is gone.”
Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: "The consumption of garlic has been prohibited except when cooked."
Abu Ziya al-Hiyar ibn Salama, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated:
It was asked Aishah, may Allah be pleased with her, about onions. Aishah, may Allah be pleased with her, replied that onions were part of the last meal the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, ate.
