BEVERAGES SECTION · 17 – DRINKING WATER FROM GOLD AND SILVER CUPS
It is narrated from Ibn Abi Layla, may Allah be pleased with her, that:
Hudhaifa was in Media. He asked for water, and the chief of the town brought him a silver cup. Hudhaifa threw the cup at him and said: “I threw it at him because he did not abandon this, despite my having previously forbidden him from it.” Indeed, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade (people) from silk and satin (clothing), and drinking water from gold and silver vessels, saying: "These are for others in this world, so that they may be for you in the Hereafter."
Jabir ibn Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated:
That a person from the companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) entered upon a person from the Ansar. That man was changing water in his garden. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “If you have water that has spent the night in a *qirba*, then we will drink it; otherwise, we will sip it with our mouths.” The man from the Ansar said, "I do have water that has spent the night in a *qirba*."
[Explanation: *Shen*: This is an old term for *qirba*. It indicates that allowing water to spend the night and settle is more beneficial for health, and there is no objection to drinking water by inclining one's mouth.]
