SECTION ON DRINKS · 10 – HOW SHOULD THE MUST OBTAINED FROM DRIED GRAPES BE?
3710 – It is narrated from Abdullah ibn Daylamī’s father (Fīrūz) Daylamī (may Allah be pleased with him) as follows: We came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, you know who we are, where we have come from, and to whom we have come. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: (You have come) to Allah and His Messenger. We said: O Messenger of Allah, we have vineyards; what should we do with their grapes? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Dry them.” We asked: What should we do with the dried grapes? He said: “Extract its must (juice) for your morning meal and drink it at your evening meal. Extract its must for your evening meal and drink it at your morning meal. However, dry it in a leather container; do not dry it in large earthenware jars, for if its pressing is delayed, it will turn into vinegar.” [388]
3711 – It is narrated from ʿĀʾisha (may Allah be pleased with her) as follows: For the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), must (juice) would be prepared in a leather waterskin tied at the top. The waterskin had an opening at its upper part. The must would be prepared in the morning and he would drink it at the evening meal. If it was prepared in the evening, he would drink it at the morning meal. [389]
3712 – It is narrated from ʿĀʾisha (may Allah be pleased with her): She would prepare must (juice) for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the morning. When evening came, he would eat his evening meal and drink from it after the meal. If anything remained, I would pour it out or empty it, then at night I would again prepare must, and when morning came, he would eat his morning meal and drink from it after the meal. ʿĀʾisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: The waterskin in which the must was prepared would be washed in the morning and evening. ʿAmr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: My father asked ʿĀʾisha (may Allah be pleased with her), “Was the vessel washed twice a day?” She replied, “Yes (it was prepared twice and washed twice a day).”
3713 – It is narrated from Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with him) as follows: Must (juice) would be prepared from dried grapes for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He would drink it on the day it was prepared, the next day, and until the evening of the third day. Then he would order (it to be brought); if it had not spoiled, he would give it to his servants to drink, or it would be poured out. Abū Dāwūd said: As for the meaning of giving it to the servants, the first thing that comes to mind in this matter is (the spoilage that occurs in the must) (if it had not yet spoiled, he would give it to them to drink; if it had spoiled, he would pour it out). EXPLANATION
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would drink the must prepared for him for three days; then, if the weather was very hot and it soured quickly, he would have it prepared in the evening and drink it in the morning; if it had not spoiled, he would give it to his servants to drink. If it had soured, he would have it poured out. Sometimes he would have it prepared in the morning and drink it in the evening, and he would have the containers washed immediately so that it would not sour.
