SECTION · 34 – EATING LOCUSTS
3812 – It is narrated from Abū Ya‘fūr (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I heard the son of Abū Awfā. I asked him whether locusts may be eaten. The son of Abū Awfā replied: I accompanied the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) on six or seven campaigns. We used to eat locusts with the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him). [446]
EXPLANATION
Abū Ḥanīfa, al-Shāfiʿī, and Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal have considered locust meat to be permissible (mubāḥ).
3813 – It is narrated from Salmān (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about locusts. The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Most of Allah’s army consists of locusts. I neither eat it nor declare it unlawful.”
3814 – It is narrated from Salmān (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about (locusts): He replied in the same manner as in the previous hadith, and said: Most of Allah’s army consists of locusts.
