BEVERAGES SECTION · 8 – BLENDS OF GRAPE AND DATE JUICE
Jabir ibn Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade combining the juices of dried raisins and dates. He also forbade combining the juices of dried dates and fresh dates.
EXPLANATION
It is understood that the prohibition of combining grapes and dates, or dried dates and fresh dates, stems from two reasons: 1 – The poverty of the companions. 2 – Because when the juices of these two fruits are combined, they become sharp and cause intoxication by quickly souring. [385]
From the report of Abdullah’s father, Abu Katada, may Allah be pleased with him:
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade combining dried raisins with black dates, combining dried dates with fresh dates, and mixing newly ripened fresh dates with mature fresh dates, and said, “Consume each of these separately, as a drink or preserved fruit.”
It is narrated from a man among the companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, that he said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade combining dates made from palm fruit with dates made from raisins in a fermented drink.
Kebşe binti Abu Maryem, may Allah be pleased with her, related:
I asked Ummu Salama, may Allah be pleased with her, why the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade something. She replied: He forbade us from cooking dates until they were softened enough to break their kernels, and from preserving raisins and dates together (in brine).
EXPLANATION
Belh: A type of dried plum.
Acume: To chop or crush.
Neva: Meaning kernel.
Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) related: It was customary to make a syrup from raisins for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him), adding dates to it, or to make a syrup (pickle) from dates, adding raisins to it.
Safiyya bint Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) related:
I entered upon Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) along with some women from the tribe of ‘Abd al-Qays. They asked her about dried raisins and dates (referring to a mixed preserve made thereof). Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) responded: “I would take a handful of dates and a handful of dried raisins, put them both in a bowl, crush them with my finger, and then give it to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him).”
