LEASE SECTION · 66 – MONEY RECEIVED FROM THE SALE OF WINE AND DEAD ANIMALS
It is narrated on the authority of Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Indeed, Allah has prohibited intoxicants, the price of intoxicants, dead animals, the price of dead animals, pork, and the price of pork.”
Jabir ibn Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated:
I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) say in the year of the conquest of Mecca:
“Allah has forbidden the sale of intoxicants, dead animals, pork, and idols.”
Some among the companions said: “What about the fat of the dead animal? We use it to polish ships, grease hides, and people burn it for light.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) said: "No, that is forbidden." Then he said: “May Allah destroy the Jews! Allah forbade them from the fat of dead animals. They melted it down and sold it, consuming its price.”
It is related on the authority of Yazid ibn Abi Habib that he said:
A similar narration to the one previously mentioned from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) was written to me by Ata ibn Abu Rabah. In Ata’s narration, the phrase “He is forbidden” was not stated.
Ibn 'Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, said:
I saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sitting near Ruqn Yemeni.
Ibn 'Abbas said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, raised his gaze to the sky and laughed, whereupon he said three times: “May Allah curse the Jews! Allah forbade them from its inner fat, yet they sold it and consumed its price. Indeed, when Allah forbids a people from consuming something directly, He has forbidden its price as well.”
In the narration of Khalid ibn Abdullah (at-Tahhan), he did not use the phrase "I saw" (Ra'aytu).
Instead of the sentence “Leanellahûl Yahûde” (May Allah curse the Jews), it was narrated as “Kâtelallahü Yahude” (May Allah take the lives of the Jews).
Muġira ibn Shu'ba (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated:
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) said: “Whoever sells alcohol, let him slaughter pigs (and eat pork).”
COMMENTARY:
Just as consuming alcohol is forbidden, so too is selling it. Whoever sells alcohol will also consume pork, for both are prohibited; whoever declares one permissible declares the other permissible as well.
Mishka: This refers to a broad-bladed knife. Butchers use such knives to slaughter animals.
Therefore, those who sell alcohol should slaughter pigs with broad-bladed knives and butcher them, for that is what awaits them.
Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: When the last verses of Surah al-Baqarah were revealed, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) came to our home. He recited these verses to us and said: “The trade in alcohol has been prohibited.”
A’mes (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated a report with the same meaning and chain of narration as the preceding hadith. In that report, it is said: “At the time when the last verses regarding riba (usury) were revealed [271].”
