SECTION ON LEASING · 61 – THE EXEGESIS OF CĀIHAN


3471 – From ʿAṭāʾ (may Allah be pleased with him): Jawāʾiḥ (calamities) are anything that causes harm and destruction, such as rain, hail, locusts, wind, or fire.


3472 – It is narrated from Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd that he said: If less than one third of the property is afflicted by calamity, it is not treated as a calamity. Yaḥyā continued, saying: This is the custom among the Muslims.
EXPLANATION
The matter narrated in this hadith explains the issue mentioned in hadith number 3469, which states that due to a calamity, a debtor’s debt will be reduced.
