The Ruling on Sales and Purchases Made with a Written Document

Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "When you engage in trade through *iyna*, selling something on credit and then buying it back at a lower price, when you abandon jihad and are content to subsist by tending cattle, then Allah will afflict you with such tribulation that it will not release you from it until you return to your religion."
**Note:** *Iyna* refers to selling an item on credit to a customer and delivering it, then buying the same item back from them for cash at a lower price. The opinion of Imam al-Shafi'i is that such sales are permissible. (Avn al-Mabud, vol. 3, p. 291)
The hadith warns those who abandon jihad, content with their bellies being filled, that they will ultimately fall into tribulation.
