SECTION OF LAWSUITS · 3 – ASPIRING TO AND BEING EAGER FOR JUDGESHIP
3577 – It is narrated from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Bishr al-Anṣārī al-Arzaq (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: Abū Masʿūd al-Anṣārī was sitting in a circle. Two men entered through the Kinda gates and said, “Is there not someone among you who can judge between us?” Someone from the circle said, “I am.” Abū Masʿūd took a handful of pebbles, threw them at him, and said, “Refrain from this! (In the Age of Felicity) rushing to judgeship was considered reprehensible.”
3578 – It is narrated from Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I heard the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) say: “Whoever desires the office of judge and seeks help (from intermediaries) to become a judge, is left to himself in his judgeship. But whoever is given judgeship without seeking it and without using an intermediary, Allah sends down an angel to guide him to what is right.” [318]
3579 – It is narrated from Abū Mūsā (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “We do not appoint to our affairs anyone who asks for it, nor anyone who is eager for it.” [319]
