On the authority of Amr bin Shu’ayb, from his grandfather, he reported:

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade sales involving retainers (kapora).

Malik ibn Anas said: Allah knows best, but according to our opinion, this sale occurs as follows:

A person buys a slave or leases an animal and then says, "I will give you one dinar if I abandon what I have bought and leased." [278]

**Explanation:**

Sales involving retainers are like a transaction resembling kaporas. It is as if someone says to you, “I will take this commodity from you, and I’ll give you fifty lira as a retainer; if I do not take it, my retainer is forfeited.” If the person does not take the commodity and retracts, the retainer is also forfeited. This type of transaction is invalid.
