Utbe ibn Abdussalam reported: I requested the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to clothe me. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) then clothed me in two pieces of plain linen cloth. And I saw that among my relatives, my garment was the finest.

Abū Burdah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated: My father said to me: "O my son, if you had seen us with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, when we were caught in rain, you would have seen what a sight it was. You would have thought our scent was the scent of sheep."

COMMENTARY

When woolen garments become wet, they emit a woolly odor. If many people are wearing wool, the collective odor emanating from them all would be like that of a flock of sheep.

This hadith of Abū Burdah is narrated to explain that the companions wore woolen garments.
