SECTION · 35 – The Ruling on Eating a Fish That Died of Its Own in Water

Jabir ibn Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated:
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) said: “Eat the flesh of the fish that is thrown out by the sea and remains on land when the seawater recedes. Do not eat a fish that dies in the water and floats to the surface.” [447]
COMMENTARY:
Imam al-A’zam has deemed it disliked (makruh) to eat a fish that dies in the water and floats to the surface. Imam Malik and Imam Shafi'i hold the view that it is permissible (mubah). (Maalim al-Sunan, vol. 5, p. 321)
