Drinks Section · 19 – When does a person distributing water to a community drink for themselves?
Abdullah ibn Abu Aufa (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated:
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) said: "He who waters the congregation, drinks with the last of them."
Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) related:
Some diluted milk was brought to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him).
There was a bedouin on his right and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) on his left. He drank from it, then gave it to the bedouin, and said, “It is given to the one on the right, then to the one on his right.”
COMMENTARY:
Commencing the offering of hospitality from the right side, and the person drinking giving the remaining milk to the one on his right, who in turn gives it to the one on his right, is a sunnah.
Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) related:
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) would, when he drank water, take three breaths and say, “This is easier, sweeter, lighter, and more beneficial for health.” [402]
