3621 – It is narrated from Ashʿath (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: There was a piece of land shared between me and a Jew. The Jew denied (my share). I seized him and brought him to the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me, “Do you have any evidence?” I said, No. Thereupon he said to the Jew, “Swear an oath.” I said, O Messenger of God, (he is a Jew) he will swear an oath and take my property and leave. Upon this event, Allah the Exalted revealed the verse, “Indeed, those who exchange the covenant of Allah and their oaths for a small price...” to the end of the verse. (Āl ʿImrān, 77) [338]
