Muhammed b. Abdullah, b. Abdulmuttalib, b. Hâşim, b. Abdi Menaf, b. Kusayy, b. Kilab, b. Mürre, b. Ka’b, b. Lüey, b. Galib, b. Fihr, b. Mâlik, b. Nadr, b. Kinane, b. Huzeyme, b. Müdrike, b. İlyas, b. Mudar, b. Nizar, b. Maadd, b. Adnan.1 All sources agree that Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his ancestors back to Adnan share the same names and lineage,2 and are also agreed upon in their descent from Isma’il (peace be upon him), son of Ibrahim (peace be upon him).3 Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)’s nineteenth-generation ancestor was Maadd b.
Adnan; was a contemporary of Isa (Jesus) (peace be upon him).4 The 600-year interval between Isa (peace be upon him) and Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)5 further confirms this. Maadd took over the service of the Ka’bah after the death of his father, Adnan, and never left the Sacred Harem of Mecca.6 Adnan also assumed the service of the Ka’bah after the death of his father, Üded, had a black curtain woven for the Ka’bah,7 and erected the fallen boundary stones of the Sacred Harem.8 The people of Mecca being called Quraish is due to Nadr b. Kinane, who was in the twelfth generation of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and was first called by the title of Quraish.9 And as stated in the Noble Qur’an, they are descendants of the lineage of Ibrahim (peace be upon him).10 Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was chosen from among them and a prophet was sent to them.11 Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) belongs to the purest and most honorable family, both paternally and maternally, within the Quraish tribe. He himself explained this in his sayings: “Allah Most High chose Isma’il from among the sons of Ibrahim (peace be upon him).12 From among the sons of Isma’il, He chose the descendants of Kinane. From among the descendants of Kinane, He chose the Quraish. From among the Quraish, He chose the Hâshimites. And from among the Hâshimites, He chose me.”13 “I am Muhammad b. Abdullah b. Abdulmuttalib! Allah Most High created creation and placed me within their most excellent group! Then He divided them into two groups, and I was in the most excellent of those groups. Then He divided them into tribes, and I was in the most excellent of those tribes. Then He divided them into families, and I was in their most excellent family. I am the best among you in lineage, and the best among you in character!”14
