Cebr's Return to Islam After Being Tortured
Cebr, a Jew, was a slave of the sons of Abduddar.[1258] Our Prophet (PBUH) recited Surah Yusuf in Mecca before the Hijra, and Cebr listened to it. He became convinced that this was the Word of Allah and converted to Islam. However, he kept his conversion secret. When Abdullah b. Sa’d b. Abi Serh apostatized from Islam and fled to Mecca, he informed his masters about Cebr’s Islam before even entering his house; they subjected Cebr to the severest torture, forcing him to renounce his faith and convert him back from Islam. When our Prophet (PBUH) conquered Mecca, Cebr came and narrated to him what had happened, attributing it to Abdullah b. Sa’d b. Abi Serh. Our Prophet (PBUH) bought Cebr from his masters, freed him, married him to a noble woman from the Banu Amir tribe, and provided him with sustenance.[1259]
