Consultation on Measures Against the Advancing Polytheist Armies
The infidel armies of Quraysh began preparations to march on Medina. A horseman from the tribe of Huzaa reached Medina in four days and informed our Prophet (PBUH) that the infidels of Quraysh were preparing to march from Mecca towards Medina. Our Prophet (PBUH) quickly gathered the Muslims, informed them of the enemy’s intentions, and discussed with them how to fight against the infidels. He advised them to avoid behavior contrary to Allah’s commands, to endure hardships, and promised that if they did so, Allah’s help would reach them. He commanded and advised them to obey the orders of Allah and His Messenger. He consulted them on what needed to be done. For in matters of war, it was the custom of our Prophet (PBUH) to consult his companions and hear their opinions. This time too, he asked them: “Should we engage in battle outside Medina, or should we stay in Medina and retreat behind the trenches we will dig? Or should we advance towards the enemy, turn our backs to this mountain, and fight a defensive battle?” The companions presented views that contradicted each other.[32]
