The Defeat and Scattering of the Polytheists
Hamza held two swords in his hands,[300] and the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said before him: “I am the lion of Allah!” and he struck the disbelievers with his sword from front to back.[301] Both sides engaged in fierce combat. Hamza, Ali, Abu Dujana, and the warriors drew their swords and plunged into the ranks of the disbelievers.[302] As Wahshi said, Hamza was like a wild bull elephant, trampling everyone he encountered, running them through with his sword, leaving nothing he touched unharmed. [303] Allah Most High sent His aid to the Muslims and fulfilled His promise of victory to them. The Muslims struck down the disbelievers and separated them from their encampments. The disbelievers had been decisively defeated.[304] As Zubayr b. al-Awwam said, the commander of the disbelievers Abu Sufyan’s wife Hind bint Utba, her servants, and other disbelieving women, taking whatever they could carry with them, began to flee.[305] Bara’ b. ‘Azib also said: “By Allah, I saw at that time that the disbelieving women were gathering their clothes, running swiftly with their anklets visible on their calves!”[306] Mikdad b. Amr also reported that when their standard-bearers were killed, the disbelievers were routed, and the Muslims entered their encampments and began to gather spoils.[307]
