The General Pledge of Allegiance to Abu Bakr

After the Ansar of Banu Sa’id covered Hz. Abu Bakr and pledged allegiance to him, the next day (Tuesday), Hz. Abu Bakr ascended the minbar of the mosque and sat down. Before he began his speech, Hz. Umar stood up. After praising Allah and glorifying Him: “O people! I spoke some words to you yesterday. I did not find them in Allah’s Book, nor did the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) speak to me about this matter. However, I thought that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) would leave us behind and manage our affairs himself. But indeed, Allah has left you a Book that guides to the right path, if you hold fast to it, Allah will guide you by it as He guided His Messenger. Allah has entrusted the caliphate to one who is good for you and is the companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), the second of the two in the cave. Stand up; pledge allegiance to him!” The people in the mosque pledged allegiance to Hz. Abu Bakr. [546]
