The Necessity of Care in Prayer
Our Prophet (PBUH) was once sitting in the mosque,338 when a man, resembling a Bedouin,339 came and performed two rak’ahs of prayer near our Prophet (PBUH).340 He performed the prayer hastily and carelessly.341 Sünen 1/361. İsrâ and Mirac Mucizesi 577 Our Prophet (PBUH) was watching his careless manner.342 The man came to our Prophet (PBUH) and greeted him. After returning the greeting,343 our Prophet (PBUH) said to him: “Go back and pray properly, for you have not prayed!”344
The man went back and prayed again as he had done before.345 Then he came back to our Prophet (PBUH) and greeted him again. Our Prophet (PBUH) returned the greeting and said: “Go back and pray properly, for you have not prayed!”346 The man went back and prayed again, then came and greeted our Prophet (PBUH). After returning the greeting, he said to him: “Go back and pray properly, for you have not prayed!” This happened three times.347 Those who were in the mosque were frightened by seeing how careless he was about prayer.
This was hard on them.348 Then the man said: “O Messenger of Allah! May my father and mother be sacrificed for you! I swear by Allah, Who sent down the Book to you and made you a true prophet, that I do not know how to pray properly!349 Abdurrezzak, 2/370. O Messenger of Allah!350 Show me how to pray properly and teach me!” Our Prophet (PBUH) said: “When you want to pray, when you stand up to pray, perform ablution as Allah has commanded you.351 Face the Qibla and say ‘Allahu Akbar’ to begin the prayer.352 Recite Ummu’l-Kitâb (Al-Fatiha).353 Then recite from the Quran whatever you have memorized, whatever is easy for you, and whatever you wish, as much as Allah wants you to recite.354 Then bow down in ruku’.355 When you are in ruku’, place your hands on your knees. Do not arch your back; keep it straight.356 Stay in ruku’ until your limbs are settled. When you raise your head from ruku’, stand upright until your bones are set and your limbs are settled.
