The Prophet's Command to Hz. Zeyneb and the Return of Ebu'l-Âs' Property

The Prophet (PBUH) said to Hz. Zeyneb: “O my dear! Maintain your position with honor, be cautious! Do not let Ebu’l-Âs find a way to approach you! For you are not permissible to him;[283] as long as he persists in disbelief!” [284] Hz. Zeyneb said that Ebu’l-Âs had come to ask for the property that had been seized from him,[285] and she wished for it to be returned to them.[286] Our Prophet (PBUH) sent a message to the warriors. When they gathered around him, he said: “You know that this man (Ebu’l-Âs) is one of us. You have seized his property and that of others. Those properties are among the spoils of war that Allah has granted you from the disbelievers.[287] If you deem it appropriate to return his property to him, then return it! If you refrain from returning it, then they are yours!” [288] The warriors said: “No, O Messenger of Allah! We will return those properties to him!” [289] Each one brought back everything they had taken—whether a small or large item, whether an old water jug or a towel for ablution or a rope—and gave it all to him.[290]
