The Prophet's Conversations with As b. Va'il
The Year of Sadness 495, when our Prophet (PBUH) heard these conversations, he approached them and said: “O Abu Sufyan! You are angry not for Allah and His Messenger, but because of your kinship! O father of Hakem! You will laugh little and cry much!”226 The Conversations of Âs b. Vâil with our Prophet (PBUH) One day, as our Prophet (PBUH) was leaving the Kaaba Mosque, he encountered Âs b. Vâil, one of the polytheistic Quraysh, by the gate of Benî Sehm of the mosque, and they stood and talked for a while. At that time, some of the notables of the polytheistic Quraysh were sitting together in the mosque. As they approached, they asked Âs b.
Vâil: “Who were you standing and talking to?” Âs b. Vâil said: “I was talking to that Ebter! His sons have died, his lineage has been cut off!227 He does not have a male child.228 Now his name will no longer be mentioned.229 After him, you will find comfort.230 Leave him alone!231 Now he is an ebter person.”232 Our Prophet (PBUH) had a second son named Abdullah born to Khadijah in the Islamic era, who passed away at the age of four.233 Vâhidî, s. 306-307, Râzî, 32/132, Kurtubî, 20/222, Hâzin, 4/417.
