THOSE WHO CAME TO MADINA AND THE ENVOYS SENT FROM MADINA

The Letter of Our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) Concerning the Banū Ḥāris and Banū Nahd

The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) wrote, or had written, to Qays b. Ḥusayn Dhūl-Gussāʾ regarding the sons of his father, the Banū Ḥāris, and their allies the Banū Nahd: “As long as they perform the prayer, give the zakāt, separate themselves from the polytheists, bear witness that they are Muslims, and acknowledge that Muslims have a right in their wealth, they are under the protection of Allah and His Messenger. They are not obliged to pay ʿushr (a type of tax), nor to assemble for war.”[175]
