TOWARDS THE DAY OF SEPARATION

The Return of Dhū’l-Kalāʿ and Dhū ʿAmr from the Road

Thereupon, Dhū ʿAmr said to Jarīr b. ʿAbdullāh: “O Jarīr! You are indeed a good people, in an honorable position! (35) Let me inform you of this: (36) As long as you, the Arab community, (37) consult among yourselves about who will succeed when an amīr dies, you will always remain in goodness! But when the matter is settled by the sword, by force and domination, you become kings! You then become angry as kings become angry, and pleased as kings become pleased! (38) Convey greetings to your master! (39) Inform him that we have come this far! If Allah wills our return, (40) perhaps we shall return.” (41) They gave greetings to Jarīr b. ʿAbdullāh, (42) and returned to Yemen. (43) Jarīr b. ʿAbdullāh also went to Madīna. (44)
