Abd al-ʿAzīz b. ʿAbd al-Salām b. Qāsim b. Ḥasan b. Muḥammad al-Muhaḏḏab, Shaykh ʿIzz al-Dīn b. ʿAbd al-Salām Abū Muḥammad al-Sulamī al-Dimashqī. He belonged to the Shāfiʿī madhhab (school of law). He was a shaykh of his madhhab and provided beneficial knowledge to the Shāfiʿīs. He authored excellent works of classification. Among these are his works on tafsir (Qur'anic exegesis), Ikhtiṣār al-Nihāya, al-Qawāʿid al-Kubrā wa’l-Ṣughrā, Kitāb al-Ṣalāt, and al-Fatāwā al-Muṣuliyya. He was born in the year 577 or 578 of the Hijra, listened to many hadith, studied with Fakhr al-Dīn b. ʿAsākir and others, and became a scholar of advanced rank in his madhhab. He mastered many sciences, taught beneficial knowledge to students, and served as a teacher in several madrasas in Damascus. He was appointed as preacher (khaṭīb) of Damascus, then migrated to Egypt, where he gave lessons, sermons, and legal judgments. In Egypt, he was given the leadership of the Shāfiʿīs. People from other lands would come to him to seek fatwas (legal opinions).
He was a refined and elegant person, selecting his proofs from poetry and presenting them. The reason for his departure from Damascus was his opposition to Ṣāliḥ Ismāʿīl. For Ṣāliḥ Ismāʿīl had handed over Ṣafad and Sakīf to the Franks, and he (Ibn ʿAbd al-Salām) protested against him for this reason. In his protest, Shaykh Abū ʿAmr b. Ḥājib al-Mālikī joined him. Because of this, King Ṣāliḥ Ismāʿīl exiled both of them from Damascus. Abū ʿAmr went to Nāṣir Dāwūd, the ruler of Karak, who honored him. Ibn ʿAbd al-Salām went to King al-Ṣāliḥ Ayyūb b. Kāmū, the ruler of Egypt, who also honored him, appointing him as judge (qāḍī) of Egypt and preacher of the Jāmiʿ al-ʿAtīq. Later, he removed him from both positions and appointed him as a teacher in the Ṣāliḥiyya. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. ʿAbd al-Salām died this year on the tenth of Jumādā al-Awwal at over eighty years of age.
The next morning, he was buried in the Saff al-Muqattam cemetery. Sultan Ẓāhir and a large crowd attended his funeral. May the Exalted Allah have mercy upon him.
