He was the brother of Abū Ḥākim al-Ḥayrī. Ḥayr is the name of one of the Persian provinces. ʿAbdullāh listened to hadith. He transmitted them. He took fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) lessons from Shaykh Abū Isḥāq al-Shīrāzī. He possessed knowledge of farāʾiḍ (Islamic inheritance law), literature, and lughah (language). He produced works of classification. He was a person of good conduct. He used to write mushafs (copies of the Qurʾān) for a fee. One day, while writing, the pen fell from his hand. He then leaned against the wall and said: "By Allah, if this is death, it is very pleasant." After saying this, he passed away.
