The actual name of this individual is Jundub b. Nadla b. Abdullah b. Rafi al-Azdī. His kunya (honorific) is Abu Muhammad. He was an ally of the sons of Abd al-Muttalib. He is also known as Ibn Bahina. His mother’s name was Bahina bint Aret. Aret’s name was Harith b. Muttalib b. Abd Manaf. Abdullah b. Malik became Muslim in the earliest days of Islam. He joined the ranks of the Companions (ṣaḥāba) of the Messenger of God (peace be upon him). He was a person who engaged much in worship, prayer, and fasting. He spent nearly all his time fasting. Ibn Saʿd said: Abdullah b. Malik resided in Batn Rim, thirty miles from Medina. He died during the second governorship of Marwan. Marwan’s second governorship was between the forty-fifth and fifty-eighth years after the Hijra. Curiously, Ibn al-Jawzī transmits the words of Muhammad b. Saʿd on this matter. There, it is stated that Abdullah b. Malik died in the fifty-ninth year after the Hijra. Allah knows best the truth of the matter.
