ʿAbdussalām b. Muḥammad b. ʿAbdulwahhāb b. Sallām b. Khālid b. Himrān b. ʿIbān. He is a descendant of ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān. His kunyah is Abū Hāshim b. Abī ʿAlī al-Jubbāʾī. He himself was a scholar of kalām (Islamic theology), and his father was also a scholar of kalām. Both he and his father were Muʿtazilīs. The Ḥāshimiyya faction of the Muʿtazila is attributed to him. Just as his father had some works, he also has works concerning Muʿtazilism. He was born in the year 247 AH and died in the month of Shaʿbān in the year 321 AH.
Ibn Ḥallīkān said: “He had a son named Abū ʿAlī who one day went to the presence of Ṣāḥib b. ʿAbbād. Ṣāḥib honored him and showed respect, then asked him some questions. He replied, ‘Saying “I do not know” is half of knowledge.’ Ṣāḥib responded to him: ‘You have spoken rightly; your father also said before you that one who says so does not reflect half of knowledge.’”
