Al-Bukhārī, through the chain of transmission from Qabīsa, narrated from ʿAbdullāh as follows:
"While the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was distributing the booty of Ḥunayn, one of the Anṣār (the Helpers) said:
- With this distribution, the pleasure of Allah was not intended.
Upon hearing this, I went to the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him of the situation. Thereupon, the color of his face changed. Then he said:
- May Allah's mercy be upon Mūsā. He suffered more harm than this, but he was patient (sabr).
Al-Bukhārī, through the chain of transmission from Qutayba b. Saʿīd, narrated from ʿAbdullāh as follows:
"On the day of Ḥunayn, regarding the distribution of booty, the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) favored some people. For this reason, he gave 100 camels to Aqraʿ b. Ḥābis. He also gave 100 camels to ʿUyayna. He gave the same amount to some others as well.
A man said:
- With this distribution, the pleasure of Allah was not intended. I said: I will inform the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) of this. Upon my informing him, he said:
- May Allah have mercy on Mūsā. He suffered more harm than this, but he was patient (sabr).
In another narration of al-Bukhārī, the following expressions are found:
"A man said: By Allah, justice was not observed in this distribution, and with it, the pleasure of Allah was not intended.
I said: By Allah, I will inform the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) of this.
When I went and informed him, he said:
- May Allah have mercy on Mūsā. He suffered more harm than this, but he was patient (sabr).
Muḥammad b. Isḥāq, through the chain of transmission from Abū ʿUbayda b. Muḥammad b. ʿAmmār b. Yāsir, narrated from Miksem Abū'l-Qāsim as follows: "Telīd b. Kilāb al-Laythī and I went to ʿAbdullāh b. ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ. He was circumambulating the Kaʿba with his shoes in his hand. We asked him:
- On the day of Ḥunayn, when the man from Tamīm was speaking with the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him), were you present?
- Yes. A man from the Banū Tamīm, named Dhū'l-Khuwayṣira, came and stood beside the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him), who was distributing shares of the booty to the people. He said to him:
- O Muḥammad! I have seen what you did today. The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) asked:
- Yes, and how did you see it? He replied:
- I saw that you did not act justly. Thereupon, the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) became angry and said:
- Woe to you! If there is no justice with me, then with whom will it be?
ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him) said:
- O Messenger of God, allow me to strike his neck. The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: - Leave him. For he will have followers who will delve deeply into religion. They will eventually depart from Islam as an arrow passes through its game. One looks at the arrowhead and finds nothing on it. Then at its tip, and finds nothing. Then at its shaft, and finds nothing. Then at its feathers, and finds nothing. It has passed through without retaining anything of the entrails, intestines, or blood."
Lays b. Saʿd, through the chain of transmission from Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd, narrated from Jābir b. ʿAbdullāh as follows:
"On the return from Ḥunayn, while at Jiʿrāna, a man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). There was silver in Bilāl's garment. The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) was taking silver from there and giving it to the people. The man said: - Be just, O Muḥammad! Thereupon, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
- Woe to you! If I do not act justly, then who will? If I do not act justly, I will be ruined and lost.
ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb said:
- O Messenger of God, allow me to kill this hypocrite. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: - I seek refuge in Allah from people saying that I kill my own Companions (ṣaḥāba). For this man and his companions recite the Qur'an, but it does not go beyond their throats. They depart from Islam as an arrow leaves the bow."
Imām Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal, through the chain of transmission from Abū ʿĀmir, narrated from Jābir as follows:
"Once, the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) was distributing the booty of Ḥunayn, and a man stood up and said:
- Be just.
The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
- If I am not just, I am doomed."
In the authentic collections of al-Bukhārī and Muslim, through the chain of transmission from Abū Salama, it is narrated from Abū Saʿīd as follows:
"One day, while the Prophet was distributing booty, we were with him. At that time, a man named Dhū'l-Khuwayṣira from the tribe of Banū Tamīm came and said:
- O Messenger of God, do not deviate from justice and fairness. The Prophet said:
- Woe to you! If I do not act justly, then who does? If I do not uphold justice, I will suffer great loss. If I do not uphold justice, then who will?
ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb said:
- O Messenger of God, allow me to strike his neck. The Prophet replied:
- Leave him. For he has companions, and they are a people such that any of you would consider your prayer insignificant compared to theirs, and your fasting insignificant compared to theirs. They recite the Qur'an, but what they recite does not go beyond their throats and collarbones. They depart from Islam as an arrow passes through its game. One looks at the arrowhead and finds nothing on it. Then at its tip, and finds nothing. Then at its shaft, and finds nothing. Then at its feathers, and finds nothing. The sign of that group is that among them is a black man, one of whose upper arms is like a woman's breast or a piece of flesh hanging from his body. When division and discord appear among the people, they will emerge.
The narrator of the hadith, Abū Saʿīd, says: I testify that I heard this from our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with my own ears, and I testify that I was with ʿAlī, the son of Abū Ṭālib (may Allah be pleased with him), when he fought these people. At ʿAlī's command, that man was sought, found, and brought. I looked at him, and he was exactly as the Prophet had described him, possessing the characteristics he had mentioned."
