His kunyah was Abū'l-Fath. He was also known as Ibn Hammāmī. He took fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) lessons from Abū Wafāʾ b. ʿUkayl. He became a great scholar in the Ḥanbalī madhhab (legal school). Later, the Ḥanbalī ʿulamāʾ (scholars) turned against him. Their opposition caused Ahmed b. ʿAlī to convert to the Shāfiʿī madhhab. He studied knowledge from Ghazzālī and Shāshī. He advanced in knowledge and became a leading figure. He testified on behalf of Zaynabī, and Zaynabī accepted his testimony. Ahmed b. ʿAlī taught for one month at the Nizāmiyya madrasa. He died in the month of Jumādā al-Awwal of that year and was buried in the Bab-ı Ibrīz cemetery.
