Ahmed b. Muḥammad

Ahmed b. Muḥammad b. ʿAlī al-Qādisī. He was Amāʾī. He belonged to the Ḥanbalī madhhab (legal school). He was the father of the author of the work titled az-Zayl ʿalā Tārīkh Ibn Jawzī (The Supplement to the History of Ibn Jawzī). Ahmed b. Muḥammad was among those who regularly attended the circle of Shaykh Abū'l-Faraǧ b. Jawzī. He would rejoice at the strange things he heard from him and say, “By Allah, this is a very beautiful thing.” On one occasion, Shaykh Abū'l-Faraǧ asked him for a loan of ten dinars, but he did not give him the money. After that, he would come to the circle but remain silent. Once, the Shaykh said to him, “By Allah, this man from Qādisiyya does not lend us money and no longer says, ‘By Allah, this is a beautiful thing.’ May Allah have mercy on them all.” Ahmed b. Muḥammad al-Qādisī once went to the palace of al-Mustadī and wished to lead the caliph al-Mustadī in the tarāwīḥ prayer. He was asked, in a way that the caliph could hear, “What is your madhhab?” He replied that he belonged to the Ḥanbalī madhhab. Then they told him, “You cannot lead the prayer in the caliphate palace because you belong to the Ḥanbalī madhhab.” He said, “I belong to the Ḥanbalī madhhab and I will pray with you.” The caliph said, “Leave him alone. No one else will lead us in prayer except him.”
