Ahmed b. Muḥammad b. Ḥusayn al-Arjānī. He was the qāḍī (judge) of Tustar.
He transmitted ḥadīth. He had poems containing brilliant expressions and beautiful meanings. For example, the following poem is attributed to him:
"When I tested the people,
At the moment I encountered hardships, I sought a trustworthy brother.
In states of hardship and ease, I tested them again.
To the living and lively ones, I called out, 'Is there no one to help me?'
In my sorrowful states, I saw none but those who rejoiced at my distress,
And in my joyful states, none but those who envied me.
Now I have abandoned the love and friendship of all worlds.
I walk alone on my path. I do not look back at anyone.
O those who looked back at me, you have passed by.
But you have exposed my qalb (heart) to the most painful states.
O my eyes! Cease to attack my qalb,
For it is tyranny when two people strive to kill one."
