His kunyah was Abū'l-Muẓaffar al-Ḥawāfī. He was a Shāfiʿī jurist. Ibn Ḥallīkān said: "He was the most attentive of the people of his time and the most skilled in debate. He learned fiqh from the Imām al-Ḥarāmayn. He was among his most distinguished students. He served as a qāḍī in Ṭūs and the surrounding regions. He became famous for his excellent debating skills and for silencing his opponents. The Ḥawāf to which he belonged is the name of a district affiliated with Nishapur."
