His kunyah (teknonym) is Abū'l-Faraj al-Madhal. He became famous as Ibn Maslama. He was born in the year 337 AH. He heard ḥadīth from his father, Aḥmed b. Kāmil, from Najjād, from Jahdamī, from Dālūc, and others. He was a ṣīqa (reliable) rāwī (transmitter). He lived on the eastern side of Baghdad. At the beginning of every year, that is in the month of Muḥarram, he would organize a gathering to have ḥadīth written down. He was a wise, virtuous, and cultured person. People of knowledge had made it a custom to visit his house. He learned fiqh (jurisprudence) from Abū Bakr al-Rāzī. He spent all the days of the year fasting. Every day he would recite seven juzʾ (parts) of the Qurʾān and would repeat this seven-juzʾ portion during the night prayer of tahajjud. He passed away in the month of Dhū al-Qaʿda of that year.
