He was a ḥāfiẓ of ḥadīth. He would discuss 100,000 ḥadīth. He studied and listened to ḥadīth from Isḥāq b. Raḥawayh and the ḥadīth scholars in his class. For more than thirty years, he observed many fasts. He gave much ṣadaqa (charity). When a beggar asked him for money, he would give him two dirhams; when the beggar praised Allah, he would increase it to five dirhams; when the beggar praised Allah again, he would raise the charity to ten dirhams. As the beggar continued to praise Allah, he would increase the amount of charity, eventually reaching one hundred dirhams. When the beggar said to him, "May Allah protect you and grant you a long life," he would respond: "I swear by Allah that as long as you continue your praise, I will increase your charity even if it reaches ten thousand dirhams!"
