He is the brother of ʿAlī. He is ten years older than Jaʿfar. Jaʿfar, in turn, is ten years older than ʿAlī. Likewise, Ṭālib is ten years older than Akīl; all of them became Muslims, except for Ṭālib, who did not become Muslim. Akīl became Muslim before Ḥudaybiyya and participated in the Battle of Muʾta. Among the Quraysh, he was the person most knowledgeable in the science of genealogy. He inherited the property of his close relatives who had emigrated and left their possessions in Mecca. He died during the caliphate of Muʿāwiya.
In this same year, ʿAmr b. Ḥamk b. Kāhin al-Khuzāʿī died. This person had become Muslim before the Conquest of Mecca and had emigrated. According to another narration, he became Muslim in the year of the Farewell Pilgrimage. According to a hadith, the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed that Allah would grant him the good fortune to benefit from his youth, and he lived for eighty years, during which not a single white hair was seen in his beard. Despite this, he was one of the four people who attacked ʿUthmān. Afterward, he became one of the supporters of ʿAlī and participated with him in the Battles of Jamal and Ṣiffīn. Because he was among those who assisted Ḥijr b. ʿAdī, Ziyād pursued him and sought to have him captured, but he fled to Mosul. Muʿāwiya sent word to the governor of Mosul, ordering him to search for him, and they found him. When they saw that he was hiding in a cave, he was bitten by a snake and died. The governor of Mosul cut off his head and sent it to Muʿāwiya, and his head was paraded in Damascus and other cities. Among the people, ʿAmr b. Ḥamk was the first person whose severed head was paraded.
Afterwards, Muʿāwiya sent his severed head to his wife, Amīna bint Sharīd. Amīna was in prison. The severed head was thrown into her lap. His wife Amīna placed her hand on his forehead, closed his lips, and said: "You hid him from me for a long time, then gave him to me as a gift when he was dead. I say welcome to this gift that has come to me, with neither him angry at me nor I angry at him."
