He served as a judge in Egypt for a long period. He was a trustworthy and learned individual, among the distinguished and eminent judges. He had studied jurisprudence according to the school of Abū Thawr. We have mentioned him in the work entitled "Ṭabaqāt al-Shāfiʿiyya". He requested to be relieved from his judgeship. In the year 311 of the Hijra, this resignation was accepted and he returned to Baghdad. He continued to reside there until he passed away in the month of Ṣafar of that year. His funeral prayer was led by Abū Saʿīd al-Istakhrī. He was buried in his own house.
Al-Dāraquṭnī said: "In his work entitled 'Ṣaḥīḥ', Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Nasāʾī narrated ḥadīth from ʿAlī b. Ḥusayn. Perhaps he had passed away about twenty years before him. Al-Nasāʾī mentioned his merits and virtues. May Allah have mercy on him."
