His kunyah (teknonym) is Abū'l-Ḥasan. He was a grammarian (nahwī). He became famous under the name Rummānī. He transmitted reports from Ibn Duraid. He was a genius in nahw (Arabic grammar), Arabic language and literature, logic, and kalām (theology). He authored a great tafsīr (Qur'anic exegesis). He served as a witness alongside the judge Ibn Marūf, and Ibn Marūf accepted his testimony. Tanhū and Jawharī transmitted reports from him.
Ibn Ḥallīkān said: "The reason this person was given the name Rummānī is either because he sold pomegranates (rummān), or because it derives from Kasr al-Rummān in Wasit."
ʿAlī b. ʿĪsā died at the age of eighty-eight in this year. He was buried in the Shāniziyah cemetery next to the grave of Abū ʿAlī al-Fārisī.
