His kunyah (teknonym) is Abū'l-Madīl. In his time, he was the muḥaddith (scholar of ḥadith) of Nishapur. He traveled to many cities. He studied with many scholars and listened to ḥadith; he also transmitted ḥadith himself. He compiled a work called "Musnad," consisting of 400 juzʾ (parts). He was a person who performed his work with utmost precision, had a strong memory, engaged frequently in worship, refrained greatly from forbidden acts, and was God-fearing (taqwā). He had other works as well. One of his rawī (transmitters) said: "I accompanied him on journeys and in gatherings; I do not know of any sin recorded against him by the angels."
He also had a tafsīr (Qur'anic exegesis) consisting of over 200 juzʾ. While having no illness, he went to a bathhouse and suddenly passed away there. His death occurred on a Friday, the fourteenth of Shawwāl of that year. May Allah have mercy on him.
