His real name was Masʿūd b. Muḥammad b. Masʿūd. He was from Nisābūr. He took fiqh lessons from Muḥammad b. Yaḥyā, a friend of Imām Ghazālī. He came to Dimashq. He taught at the Ghazāliyya and Mujāhidiyya madrasas. He also came to Ḥalab and taught at the madrasas of Nūr al-Dīn and ʿAsad al-Dīn. Then he went to Hamadān. From there he returned to Dimashq. He again began teaching at the Ghazāliyya madrasa. The leadership of his madhhab was given to him. He passed away on the first day of the month of Ramaḍān of that year. He was ninety-three years old at the time of his death. Fakhr Ibn ʿAsākir and others studied under him. Ḥāfiẓ Ibn ʿAsākir led his funeral prayer.
