He was among the great Companions (ṣaḥāba). He became a Muslim after the Battle of Uhud. His first participation was in the expedition of Biʾr Maʿūna. The Messenger of God (peace be upon him) sent him to the Negus (Najāshī) to contract marriage with Umm Ḥabība on his behalf and to bring back the Muslims who had remained in Abyssinia. He performed many excellent deeds and praiseworthy activities. May Allah be pleased with him. He passed away during the caliphate of Muʿāwiya.
According to what Abū'l-Faraj Ibn al-Jawzī relates in his book "al-Muntaẓam," in the fiftieth year of the Hijra, Jubayr b. Muṭʿim, Ḥassān b. Thābit, Ḥakam b. ʿAmr al-Ghifārī, Dihya b. Khalīfa al-Kalbī, ʿAqīl b. Abī Ṭālib, ʿAmr b. Umayya al-Damrī, Kaʿb b. Mālik, Mugīra b. Shuʿba, Juwayriya bint al-Ḥāriṯ, Ṣafiyya bint Ḥuyayy, and Umm Shurayk al-Anṣāriyya passed away. May Allah be pleased with them all.
