Azīz b. ʿAbdü'l-Melik Manṣūr Abū'l-Maʿālī al-Jilī. He was a qāḍī (judge). He bore the epithet Sayyid Leh. In jurisprudential branches, he belonged to the Shāfiʿī madhhab, and in creed, to the Ashʿarī madhhab. He served as a judge in Bab al-ʿAzīz. There was great enmity between him and the Ḥanbalīs of Bab al-ʿAzīz. One day, upon hearing that a man had announced the loss of his donkey, he said: "Let this man come to the Bab al-ʿAzīz district. Let him take the hand of someone he meets from the locals and lead him (with the intention of the donkey)."
One day, the Nāqib Ṭarrād al-Zaynabī said to him:
"If a person swears not to see any human being and then sees someone from the Bab al-ʿAzīz district, his oath is not broken (because they are not humans)."
In response, Nāqib Ṭarrād said to him: "If a person stays with a group for forty days, he becomes one of them."
For this reason, when Azīz b. ʿAbdülmelik died, they rejoiced greatly at his death.
