This expedition took place in the second year after the Hijra.

Ibn Ishaq said: The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) completed the Battle of Badr at the end of the month of Ramadan or at the end of Shawwal. When he arrived in Medina, he stayed there for only seven nights. Then he set out with the army against the Banu Sulaym tribe.

Ibn Hisham said: When setting out on this campaign, he appointed either Subah b. ʿUrfuṭa al-Ghifārī or the blind Ibn Umm Maktum as his deputy in Medina.

Ibn Ishaq said: The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) reached a watering place among their waters, which is called Kudr. He stayed there for three nights. Then he returned to Medina. He did not encounter any ambush. He spent the remainder of the month of Shawwal and the month of Dhu al-Qaʿda in Medina. During this stay, he released most of the prisoners taken from the Quraysh in exchange for ransom.
