The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) took this woman captive during the campaign of Muraysīʿ (Banū al-Muṣṭaliq). Her father was the chief of the Banū al-Muṣṭaliq tribe. Juwayriya became Muslim. The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) freed her and married her. Because she was taken captive during the campaign against Banū al-Muṣṭaliq, Juwayriya had fallen to the share of Thābit b. Qays b. Shammas. Juwayriya made a mukātabah contract (a contract for manumission in exchange for payment) with Thābit. She came to the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) to ask for his help in paying the price of her manumission. The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said to her:

– Shall I tell you something better than that?

– What is that, O Messenger of God?

– I will purchase you, set you free, and marry you. The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) bought her from Thābit b. Qays, set her free, and married her.

Upon this, the Muslims released the captives of Banū al-Muṣṭaliq whom they held, saying, "They are the relatives of the Messenger of God." Thus, about one hundred families gained their freedom. Regarding this event, ʿĀʾisha said:

"I do not know any woman who brought more blessing to her people than Juwayriya."

Juwayriya's original name was Barrah. The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) gave her the name Juwayriya. She was a woman of sweet speech. According to Ibn al-Jawzī, she died in the fiftieth year of the hijra. According to others, she died in the sixty-fifth year of the hijra. Al-Wāqidī said: Juwayriya died in the fifty-sixth year of the hijra. May Allah be pleased with her and grant her His contentment. Allah knows best.
